Overview

Fowlerex designed and manufactured an extraction and gas cleaning system for an activated carbon regeneration kiln at a mining operation in New South Wales, Australia.

The system is designed to extract and treat kiln exhaust gases from a process handling up to 600 kg/h of carbon, with mercury control as a key requirement.

Our Solution

Fowlerex developed a two-stage gas treatment system combining Venturi wet scrubbing and activated carbon adsorption to remove contaminants and target mercury in the kiln exhaust.

The system incorporates:

  • Venturi scrubber, model V280-180-800
  • 2 Fans, model FX630 Arr4 11kW
  • 2,000 mm diameter activated carbon filter, model 2000-400-2
  • 1,200 kg activated carbon capacity
  • 300 mm diameter × 6 m stack
  • Flow, level and differential pressure instrumentation

Stage 1 – Venturi Wet Scrubber

A Venturi scrubber provides gas quenching and primary contaminant removal capability, supported by a recirculation system and an induced draught fan. The system incorporates differential pressure, flow and level instrumentation to support reliable operation.

Stage 2 – Activated Carbon Filtration

Downstream of the scrubber, an activated carbon filter provides secondary contaminant removal capability, before the off gas is being released. The carbon adsorber is approximately 2,000 mm diameter, with a two-layer carbon bed, designed to provide additional mercury capture following the wet scrubbing stage.

Project Outcome

Fabrication was completed and the equipment was dispatched to site in September 2026.
