Overview
Goldfields Gruyere Gold Mine in Western Australia is upgrading its processing operations with a stronger focus on environmental performance and workplace safety. As part of this commitment, the mine engaged Fowlerex to design a custom scrubbing system to manage hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas generated during handling and storage.
The project required a compact, corrosion-resistant solution capable of treating low-airflow but high-concentration HCl emissions, while maintaining reliable performance under demanding site conditions.
The mine needed a system capable of treating low airflow (0.12 m³/s) but high-concentration HCl gas, while maintaining stability at 47°C and 1,500 Pa extraction pressure. Long-term corrosion resistance and minimal maintenance were key requirements due to the remote site location.
Our Solution
Fowlerex is supplying an Engineering Plastic wet scrubber system designed to efficiently absorb HCl vapour and provide durable, low-maintenance operation.
Key Components & Performance Features
- Packed-bed scrubber (400 mm dia.)
HDPE Engineering Plastic Scrubber with 2,000 mm FRP packing for high-efficiency gas absorption.
- Demister & wash system
Polypropylene demister and wash sprays to minimise droplet carryover and maintain clean operation.
- Recirculation system
1.1 kW mag-drive pump delivering 20 L/min for stable liquid distribution and corrosion resistance.
- Extraction fan (FX400-50)
Stainless-steel fan delivering 0.12 m³/s at 1,500 Pa, driven by a 2.2 kW VFD-controlled motor for reliable and adjustable performance.
Expected Outcome
This system, currently in fabrication, is designed to provide the Gruyere Gold Mine with:
- Effective absorption of HCl gas to support safer plant operation
- Improved compliance with environmental and workplace safety requirements
- High corrosion resistance and long service life
- Stable performance suitable for remote mining environments
