    Background

    A major gold project in north-western Tanzania requires advanced scrubbing systems to manage both process exhaust gas and mercury emissions generated during gold processing. Located near Mwanza, the country’s second-largest city, the project sits within the Sukumaland Archaean Greenstone Belt, a well-known gold-producing region.

    Fowlerex was engaged by Lycopodium, an international engineering and project delivery company, to design and supply a scrubbing plant for the kiln exhaust containing mercury, a scrubbing system for the smelting furnace exhaust and a wet dust scrubbing system for the reclaim tunnel. These systems are critical to ensuring worker safety, environmental compliance, and the efficient operation of the kiln, gold room furnace and reclaim tunnels. Fowlerex and Lycopodium have collaborated on several mining projects, bringing proven expertise in designing robust air pollution control solutions for challenging operating environments.

    Our Solutions

    Fowlerex’s package includes the design and supply of:

    Mercury scrubbing systems (FTPL11518)

     Two separate plants are being delivered:

    • a vapour scrubbing plant, comprising a venturi scrubber with recirculation system, 2 fans and heater, carbon filter, and exhaust stack, designed to capture mercury vapour emissions;
    • a gold room fume scrubbing plant, equipped with a venturi scrubber with recirculation system, 2 fans and heater, carbon filter, and stack, purpose-built to manage fumes from the gold room smelting furnace.

    Dust scrubbing systems (FTPL11519)

    • For reclaim tunnels, featuring custom-designed venturi scrubber, circulation pumps, valves, and high-capacity fan to minimise airborne dust and protect workers and equipment.
    • Exhaust stacks and support structures – free-standing stacks with structural steel supports, designed for durability and ease of access.
    • Integration and safety provisions – ensuring that all components are engineered to operate efficiently together, with access platforms and safety features for reliable long-term use.
